Seeing that Apple has officially discontinued their support for Quicktime for Windows and even recommend deinstalling it themselves—due to the known security risk—will Windows people even be able to play back codecs such as ProRes anymore without it?? Because if they CAN’T, I can already see the perturbed tantrums going off should I ever deliver e.g. a ProRes master to a Windows running client or partner and tell them “you’ll have to (re)install Quicktime”…

Surely there must be alternatives, no? Is anything know yet?

There’s a related discussion in the “Debate” forum, however, I think Telestream Switch is a viable option now. The question is whether or not you completely uninstall all of QT or only the player and leave (or reinstall) the QT components. Both Adobe and Avid have some dependencies to the QT components and are actively developing the hooks they need internally to replace these. Of course, that’s not available in current shipping versions of the software, but hopefully soon.

Here’s the Telestream info on this:

Ah! Thanks for the heads up on Telestream. I’ll definitely have to bookmark that! Hadn’t noticed the other thread yet, but having skimmed through it, It think I now know what I need on the subject. Cheers.

Switch is a really good file QC tool as well. To me, it’s what a professional player should be. https://www.telestream.net/switch/features.htm

Telestream products aren’t dependent on Quicktime.
