Julian Smith Soft Film Look
Hi, I’m making some research for a high school project involving different and experimental color grading techniques in film and television.
Currently I’ve been mostly impressed by the “soft, slightly vintage film look” of the popular YouTuber Julian Smith. How he preserves detail, and still produces a pretty flat and soft look. Apparently he shoots with a 5D mkII, probably with CineStyle, various lenses and pretty simple light setups, but that’s my guesses.

Now I’ve been trying to mimic the look with the 5D mkII, similar practical equipment and Magic Bullet Suite 11 with looks and colorista, though I cannot wrap my head around how to produce such a remarkable grade. There fore I ask if anyone is able to explain how to achieve this fantastic look as I’d love to present it in class.

Don’t know the precise “recipe” but I tell you, it looks like the midtones are pushed to white. Try a Color Corrector effect and push midtones (gamma, or Input Gray Level) towards white and see if that doesn’t give you a starting point.

Thank you Kevin, it does smooth out the image a bit, while still maintaining a certain contrast and detail, I’m fiddling around with it for now, trying to figure the whole thing out. If you come across something more or figure out a hint, please let me know!

Hey! I’ve been trying to achieve this look for months as well. Have you figured out how he gets it? If not, has anyone else?

I really Try too but no hope… I even try some stand alone programs but no come up right, so if you get any thoughts to reach this look let as know !
