I totally agree, I did the tests myself. My hearing is not very good and the preamps even at low levels made the sound rubbish. I used Magiclantern to turn them off and did the tests with a Senhhizer radio mic which pushes out a hotter enough signal that the preamps are not needed. So it was a like for like test.

Had anyone used the BeachTek, it turns out the juicedlink has a major design fault that makes it close to useless for me. The two stereo channels are combined to one mono channel which is played in both headphone cups! I therefore can not monitor lav and boom separately while recording interviews. I have not jet been able to clarify if BeachTek does proper stereo monitoring.

I ended up getting the BeachTek. I have just borrowed a Jucedlink from a friend. The BeachTek pushes out a higher level. In Magic Lantern I need to turn audio gain up all the way (32dB) for Jucedlink but for BeachTek I can leave it at 17dB. I have a broadcast sound recordists coming round Friday to do some full tests but having to use extra in camera gain is a bad sign.

hi Ben… It’s definitely been a while, but I was wondering if you’re still around to tell about your experience with Beachtek. I am putting together a photo/video kit for a non-profit NGO and sound is naturally part of the deal I should pay attention to.

It works well. The phantom power thing is a bit of a red herring, it sounds like a good idea but phantom power flatters batteries very fast (seem to remember having to use more than on in a morning, without phantom power the batteries last days). The main issues are not having level meters (Green light flashes when you have got a reasonable signal and goes read when you peek) and there is no limeter. As the level leds are crude a limeter is even more useful. If you have the money I would go for the Pro version.
The other question is do you really need XLR balanced inputs, if not the DXA-SLR MINI is a great option (5 segment level indicator and limiter).
Let me know what the rest of the kit is and budget and I will have a think.

Lastly who is using the camera, if ti is for general use the NX30, or even an alternative camcorder is a much better option.
