  • JPG to HD to DVD aspect ratio/settings?

i’ve been searching and reading these forums and every time i think i have the answer, it turns out i don’t.

i have to create a DVD using still pics i’ve scanned in. i saved them as 72dpi JPGs initially at 720×480, thinking that was proper HD aspect ratio (i’ve edited together one video prior to this, shot at that aspect ratio).

when i started importing the pics into vegas, i noticed they were stretched vertically. none of the project settings i chose seemed to fix it. i consulted these forums again and tried changing each event aspect ratio to 1.21 for widescreen instead of 1.0 square. not only would that be a pain to do with 55 images, that stretched them too wide.

another thread here pointed out that the true 16:9 aspect ratio is actually 854×480. so i resaved my images at 854 pixels wide and cropped them all down to 480 tall.

reimporting them into vegas, the vertical stretching in the preview is worse than ever. i even did a test saving as MPEG-2 (is that correct to eventually burn to DVD?)

what am i doing wrong? is it just a preview setting or do i need to change my project settings? PLEASE HELP! i have a tight deadline on this.

My best advice is to leave the photos as they are in their original dimensions, then crop/resize them to fit as you want in the screen. I’ve done quite a bit of work with photos and JPegs, including stuff that’s been photo edited, and this has been the best approach for me.

Try it, and let me know how it works for you.

My current documentation (i.e. what I have tested to see if it works) says that I used 872.7 (720 x 1.2121) x 480 for an SD Wide format. I crop pictures to twice this size, so I really use 1745×960. For a standard SD format, I use 1310×960 which produces an image with no visible bars.

If a setting doesn’t work, I use trial and error to zero in on a size which works. Note that the 480 (or 960) dimension is not changed. It is simply a matter to finding a good value for the horizontal dimension.

BTW, I also use PNG format for my images. Jpeg and others work, but Vegas does like PNG. I would not use pan & crop. Vegas will slow down a LOT if the photo image is too large, and it is not designed to be a still image editor.

If I drop a 720X480 picture onto my 1920X1080 timeline with default settings, perform a screen shot, open in my PSP, crop the alpha at the edges I get 1616X1080. This is the same aspect ratio that I started with. What you describe is nonsensical to me as I have never experienced the problem you describe with media set to lock-aspect-ratio.

I’m also confused as to WHY your speaking about a HD aspect ration only to describe cropping the image to 480 in height. If what your REALLY looking for is a widescreen look 16X9 gives you the key… for every 16 wide it’s 9 tall.

    160 90
    320 180
    480 270
    640 360
    800 450
    853.33 480
    960 540
    1120 630
    1280 720
    1440 810
    1600 900
    1760 990
    1920 1080

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.
