JPEG issues
For the second consecutive project now, I’ve been dealing with hundreds of JPEGS for a video.
The clients have brought CDs and DVDs in full of pictures in JPEG format, about 66 kb each.
When using these pics in Vegas, the project keeps freezing with no response.
The 1st time this happened, I rescanned all the pix into my computer, and it worked fine.
Now, on this second project, again I have discs full of pix, about the same size and same format. Any time I mouse-click outside the Vegas project window (into another window) and back into the Vegas project window, the system freezes for several minutes before it returns to normal. Any click outside the Vegas project window and back into the Vegas proect window causes this same reaction.
I have recently installed the 7.0e update, which has worked perfectly before these last two projects involving JPEGS.I am grateful for any help.

Vegas “releases” the files when it loses focus. That way if you need to edit one of those files, your photo program can access it. Once focus returns to Vegas, it has to “get” those files again which, when you have hundreds, takes some time.
You can stop Vegas from releasing the files by going into File – Preferences and uncheck “Close media files when not the active application”

Is this an option I want to leave unchecked in the future?

Unless you have a ton of files, it really is best to let Vegas release the files. That way, you can minimize Vegas, edit a photo used by Vegas, and when you restore Vegas, it will see the changes. If Vegas doesn’t release the file, the other program can’t edit it and resave it because Vegas will have it locked.
