We just got a new system from a vendor with a Ciprico FibreSTORE 2212. As I went to load in footage for my first project, I kept dropping frames. After poking around I noticed the raid had Journaling on. I reformatted the RAID without journaling and I could capture fine. My boss complained to the vendor and they said they always leave journaling on if the RAID is fast enought to take a speed hit. Anyone ever heard of this. I was under the impression that you never had journaling enabled on a media drive.

No Journaling on any Media array. Your Vendor is wrong.

“I was under the impression that you never had journaling enabled on a media drive. ‘

As far as I know this impression is right.

This is one of those hotly debated topics:

Journaling on a media array serves no valuable purpose, yet it uses up valuable space and system resources. So, why is it even debatable?

Doesn’t it allow Spotlight to work the way it does?

I’m not saying anyone should use it, but it does serve a purpose.

No. Nothing to do with Spotlight.

Really? I thought it was just indexing. Guess I’ll have to read up on it.

Apple Enterprise Group says DO NOT SETUP AN APPLE XSERVE RAID ARRAY WITH JOURNALING – only OS-X Extended.

That boys, is good enough for me.
