    Hi there,

I’m trying to give thickness to a surface so that I can get it 3d printed.
The surface mesh is generated with a displacer and has a high poly count cause I want something really detailed.
I’ve tried to create thickness with xsThickness but the result is super glitchy cause it follows the normals of the polygons I guess.
Because my surface is quite planar, I just want to give it thickness in 1 direction.
That’s where I thought of creating two identical surfaces that would be the “caps” of my solid, and try to bridge the gap between them, but I have no clue how to do that.
It would be great if this can be done with a parent or child function rather than by hand cause I have quite a few (100s) of these leaves to give thickness to.
    Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks everyone!
    Pierre

don’t know about a Child method that would work – the Cloth Surface with thickness would give results very similar to xsThickness…
By hand, assuming it’s a clean mesh, you should be able to go to Edges mode and using the Loop Selection tool set to Select Boundary Loop and select all the boundary edges. Then use the Stitch and Sew tool with the Shift key pressed to add polys between the selected loops

OMG that hand recipe worked very well actually. I’m ordering a 3d print right now to check how that looks like.
Thanks Brian. Any idea if that kind of thing can be xpresso’ed? Cause I do have 1000 leaves to go through…
    Cheers!

not with xpresso, but maybe with Coffee or Python. Are the leaves all different?

Yeah, for each one I have an alpha image to cut out the shape and a displacement image. So I have a folder with thousands of each file.
Haven’t really played with Coffee but that might be worth getting into if I can save 1000 times the time it takes to make one leaf…

I don’t know enough other than simple stuff as I said and other than the Script Log will show the Python or Coffee command associated with an action if you do anything in the editor but to put that into a plugin I have not done. Maybe ask on CGTalk
