    i have some stills that i am doing baisc moves and zooms on but they have a sort of flickering appearance as if
    the lines are moving but not all at the same time. any idea how to fix them. they started as bigger ( though not giant ) jpegs.

    Mark,

    There are several workarounds for this problem. Sometimes the move is too slow for the size of the file. Sometimes the resolution is too High for video (anything over 150dpi is complete overkill and 72 is usually fine) When you use larger file sizes you are also severely increasing render times.

    My suggestions. Try resaving the files in a lower dpi. IF the problem persists then I suggest putting a 0.2 pixel blur on the clip using the Gausian blur filter in FCP.

    After Effects will give you cleaner results….

    but if you insist on FCP…

    1. Run the Reduce Interlace Flicker action is PS CS2 (go to actions palette and choose Video Actions from the submenu)

    2. Make sure your FCP settings are set to BEST motion estimation in the Sequence Settings

    3. If needed apply the reduce flicker effect as a last result in FCP
