Jittery speed changes FCP to DVD
Hi I’ve read through previous posts on the issue – here’s the issue – my sequence is PAL DV (lower field) and contains a mix of SD and HD footage. The HD is HDV 1080 50i clips which I’ve copy and pasted into the sequence. It’s motorsport footage and a lot of the clips have speed changes applied (to make it look faster). FCP has applied the Shift Fields filter to all the HDV clips – which makes sense as they are upper field in a lower field sequence. The problem is when I export to DVD (PAL 16:9) the speed changes are all jittery and unwatchable. Also strange is that I reversed a DV clip to play backwards & that also jitters.
From what I’ve read on here, it sounds like I may have to export the HDV clips from their orignal timeline (HDV) as Quicktimes, removing all other attributes apart from the speed changes. Then import them back into my DV PAL timeline & copy the attributes back on. Can someone confirm that that’s the right way to go??
I recently had a similar issue with XDCAM EX 1080 50i clips with speed changes in an XDCAM EX sequence jittering when exported to PAL DVD – so it’s about time I nailed this problem!

i’ve asked because in some versions on FC 6, the Shift Fields filter didn’t worked when there where speed changes.
You my try nesting the clips with the filter and applying the speed change to the nest.

I made nests of the clips with speed changes, exported those sequences as Quicktimes, reimported and replaced in my timeline. Thanks Rafael.
It seems like a lot of extra work. Is there a way of doing speed changes that avoids this problem? Ax

Hmmmmm just checked test DVD and there’s still issues!! Some of the clips are OK, but there’s still jitter on quite a few. Also I freeze framed a couple of clips and then scaled in on them – I converted these to quicktimes as well, but they’re still jittery too. I’m running out of ideas – should I try turning frame blending off on the speed changes, re-export the clips & see if that makes a difference? And should I put a deinterlace/flicker on my freeze frame quicktimes?

Hi Alex,
You shouldn’t have exported the nested sequences. Just let them to be rendered with the sequence.The jittering you are having may be due to the downscaling.
Try the Flicker filter.
Works very well and it doesn’t soft the picture.
Why don’t you try to set render in High Precision and “render Motion Effects: BEST”.
This should hel with the downscaling. With the speed change too, although this you’ve already done.
If you are speeding the clips up, you can uncheck “Frame Blending”.
If you are slowing down, the picture will look choppy.

Thanks for the advice Rafael. In the end I converted the HDV clips with the speed changes to DV using Compressor and replaced them in the timeline, seemed the only thing guaranteed to work & it did thankfully. I also changed the Video Processing setting for Motion Filtering to Best as you suggested. And I used the flicker filter on a clip I’d set to play in reverse. That clip was DV, but also had really bad jitter.
