    Hi Everyone,

Im experiencing a technical issue with FCP6. For some reason as the day goes on my video playing back from the timeline starts to look a bit choppy. If I play the file from the source folder in OS X it plays smooth with out any issues. In FCP it looks like its missing frames or something.

Now I’m also starting to get a dropped frame message. I was working on a ProRes 422 HQ timeline and the video would pause as the audio kept playing. Again getting the choppy play back.

My Mac Pro is a 8 core with 16GB of RAM and is connected to a 8TB RAID 5 which is more then enough speed to play back ProRes.

    Whats going on?

    Thanks

How complicated is the timeline? lots of video layers, many audio tracks? Also how is the RAID connected? Is it FW800, eSata?

Sounds to me like a software install problem. If you’ve not built a new startup disk lately, it might be time.

Make sure all drivers for that raid are up to date, but if the hardware is all good to go, I’d suspect what’s left is software. There’s no settings to check don’t think. Might trash preferences just because it fixes most setting/user error or they can be corrupt, but a clean install might well be the best thing to do.

Michael – The timeline on one project is not to complicated. Its an offline edit and Im working in DV NTSC resolution with anywhere from 2 to 3 video tracks and up to 10 audio tracks.

The second project is in ProRess 422 HQ 720p 59.94 and there is hardly anything on the time line but a few cuts.

My RAID is connected via two MiniSAS Cable to SFF-8088. Im using the Highpoint 4322 RAID card and in Blackmagic disk speed tests I get about 790MB/s READ and 783MS/s Write

Jerry – I suspect you might be correct, my quick fix for this issue has been a system restart and everything would work fine after that for a couple of hour or the whole day sometimes.

One thing I find odd is If I use my Blackmagic Deklink card and send the video out to a client monitor it seems to help and play back looks smooth.

I’ll start backing up and will do a full re-install of the system to see of this solves the issue. How ever I do remember this happening when I first got my Mac back in 2008.

    Thanks

At the film school I teach part time at, we erase and perform a clean install on over 60 FCP bays every semester. Several of these bays include AJA cards, disk arrays etc… they NEVER show behavior that is not a “known issue aka BUG”. That’s why I’m a firm believer in keeping your installs clean, and on a busy bay – especially one used by many editors- It serves the system well to reinstall it all cleanly every year at least, and ANY time there’s an OS upgrade or a Studio upgrade. Clicking the “upgrade button” is just not a clean way to do things.

I cover all of this and more with the DVD selling here at the COW…
