Trying to make a long story short, here is my problem…. I am getting tons of timecode breaks on my online capture.

The tapes I am trying to online are captured in 23.98. My offline is in 29.97, and the offline tape have imbedded timecode both PDT and ORG. The edl is correct to the burn ins at 29.97 (everything is NDF by the way). The JHS is set at 23PD and NDF. The new PDT burn in has constant time code breaks and never sees frames 04,09,14,19,24,or 29. The ORG burn in is complete 0 -23.

Anybody have anyidea whats up? This is a new problem for me, I am guessing with the deck?

Would you not have to run the edls’ through cinema tools to generate a 23.98 timeline for the online? It sounds like you are asking the KONA to do the pulldown on the fly.

What if you just created a 23.98 cinematools sequence for the online?

Actually, I am using the 29.97 EDL with the deck doing the pull down. The problem is not that it does not match the frames, it is that the deck seems to be skipping time code.

This makes sense to me since what you are asking the deck to do is calculate pulldown and then figure which A frame to ggrab and then attach that to a TC number.

If you are finishing 23.98 then the final sequence should be 23.98. The deck should then be put in 23.98 and then capture your final sequence.

Can you create a copy of the sequence and just test a one or two miute chunk?

My experience with the 29.97 to 23.98 via HDCam is as follows:

1 – If the JH3 is anything like the F500, then you cannot capture 23.98 while the deck is set to 29.97 [if that is what you are doing]. The deck will only playback and stream data in the setting that the deck is in.

2 – Pulldown timecode does not exist on your HDCam tapes, only the originally recorded 23.98 TC. This means that even though the PD card is displaying PD TC, it is only a realtime conversion for display purposes only. There is no PD TC stream in the RS-422, nor in the HD SDI stream [although it is embedded in the SD SDI stream]. that is probably why you cannot “see” certain frames.

So you will either have to convert your 29.97 EDL to 23.98 first, or set up FCP in 23.98 and digitize your clips in 23.98, create a new blank 23.98 sequence, copy/paste your recaptured sequence media into it, then eye match against a rough.

If there’s a better way to do this, stand me correctly.
