  • Jerky playback on Cinema HD monitor only

Hi: We are running FCP 5.1.4 on a G5. We have been cutting at 23.98 (footage that was captured at 29.97 and reverse telecined) and outputting through a Kona card to an ntsc monitor and/or dvd recorder.

I have been on the project for 2 months with no problems. Suddenly this week, my playback on the computer monitors only seems jerky. My output through the Kona card to the recorder and monitor is fine. I have double-checked my fcp settings, nothing seems to have changed. (playback output is through AJA Kona 525i29.97 8 bit (720×486), mirrored on desktop.

I talked to Kona support, because the playback on the ntsc monitor is fine, they think it is a problem with the software or my graphics card. Also, in the last few days (I can’t say for sure if it was the same day the jerky playback started)., after I boot up, the folders and icons which usually appear on the right monitor are partly appearing on the right monitor – kind of ghosting. As soon as I click anywhere on the desktop, it reverts to it’s correct position.

Could a setting on my graphics card have changed? Could it be going south? Any other ideas?

    Thanks,
    Lara Johnston

Have you performed any basic maintenance? Reseat cards, re-connect cabling, Run Disk Utility and/or Disk Warrior, Trash FCP prefs? That’s where I would start.

I did basic stuff checked cables, trashed preferences, repaired permissions, but will try the other stuff you suggested.

Might want to look into reinstalling the Kona drivers as well. Clean system reinstall if things don’t settle in after that. And lastly (ugh) a reinstall of FCS.

    Keep us posted.

[Lara Johnston] ” Suddenly this week, my playback on the computer monitors only seems jerky.”

What do you by mean “playback on the computer monitor?” Are you outputing the Kona to a computer monitor (using an HDLink or something)? Or are you just talking about Cinema Display Mode, or the Canvas and Viewer? What does it look like when you use the QT Player?

No, I’m just talking about the canvas and the viewer. The playback looks like frames are being skipped or something. Everything is rendered, there is no warning of dropped frames. My simultaneous output (through the Kona card) to the ntsc monitor looks smooth.

I didn’t think to try playing any clips in the qt player, that is a good idea, I’ll try it tommorrow.

    Thanks
