  • Jan: 8 Gig Card/ Firestore/ NAB?

Posted by Leonard Levy on March 31, 2006 at 4:05 am

    Jan,
I am deliberating buying an 8 Gig card from my vendor because both NAB and perhaps the Firestore are both around the corner. As a general rule I don’t believe in buying anything just before NAB.
Couple of questions. ( I realise you may not be at liberty to answer all of them, but I can try.):
1 – Will the 8 Gig cards be scarce for some time to come?
2 – Will the Firestore be available soon and what will the price point be?
3 – Any chance of price drops for either at NAB and if so would Panasonic honor the new price if I bought just a few weeks before the drop?

Truth is, so far I am using this exclusively as a mini-DV camera as everyone is afraid of P2, so I’m reluctant to invest more if the price will drop in the near future.

Any reputable dealer will honor/offer “price protection” if the price drops within a reasonable time (30 days or so). The 8 gig cards price dropped 2 weeks after I received mine and AbelCine refunded me the difference.

    Cheers,

[Leonard Levy] “1 – Will the 8 Gig cards be scarce for some time to come?”
My crystal ball says that in May things should start to catch up.

[Leonard Levy] “2 – Will the Firestore be available soon and what will the price point be?”

Yes it will, we will have working units in our booth at NAB, and they all should be available by then. I keep forgetting that NAB is so late this year. List price is $2,195.

[Leonard Levy] “3 – Any chance of price drops for either at NAB and if so would Panasonic honor the new price if I bought just a few weeks before the drop?”

Since you say that everyone is afraid of the P2, why not buy the 4GB card for experimentation, by the time you get the 8GB card it will likely be May.

    Best,

How can you stand having your HVX and only shooting dv ? what’s the point ? I would go nuts. I have two 4gig cards , p2 store and a laptop. with these tools you can do just about anything. Don’t wait for 8 gig because then you will be waiting for 16 gig and oh yeah there is talk of the 32 gig.

at some point you decide to BUY because you need/want it.. the price will ALWAYS be less in coming week/month(s). IMO NAB is good time to buy.
most of the time vendors do have NAB deals which sometimes only last as long as NAB and some vendors offer NAB prices over a 2-3 week period. beware that at panasonic booth they may not have special NAB prices on their products but other vendors selling panasonic products will have special pricing…

I guess I should have mentioned that I already have 2 – 4 GIG cards.
My question is whether to purchase an 8 GIG that I ordered months ago or wait either for price drops or to spend a little less than twice as much for a firestore that holds much more storage.
I think what you tell me about availablity of the firestore soon suggests waiting for that instead of getting the 8 GIG now.
Of course I can always go ahead with the purchase and then sell the 8 GIG pretty easily (I imagine) within the next month or so.

Being at past NABs I don’t belive you buy directly from Panasonic anyway, have to go to someone like B&H

You are correct- you cannot buy from Panasonic directly at NAB. Any NAB specials you might find will be via the dealers.

    Lenny,

Invest in 8gb of real estate instead and watch your investment grow daily.

    I miss you Tony!
But I am a little surprised you restrained yourself from making disparaging comments about the “Pee 2” card on this forum.
    You’re showing great maturity.

    Leny,

    What are you pissing about?

    I said no such thing?

Hey did I tell you the story about… never mind I think I did

Now back to that 8 gb issue. I know some space for sale in Oakland 8 gb for under 200K such a bargain.
