    After using FCP 4.5 for many years, I thought time has come for an upgrade, but at the last mile I find myself walking, crawling rather than running to install it. There doesn’t seem to be any wow reactions in the chatter. Only clone warnings, and troublesome differences. The only positive feedback, after upgrading, is relief that it seems to be running okay. Notwithstanding economics, I have an intellectual investment in FCP 4.5 and certain accessories like color finesse. I don’t mind change so long as there are benefits, but from what I am hearing FCP 6 will not significantly improve the quality of life for SD editors. Things like FCP 6 “Color” is a downgrade from “Color Finesse” gives me pause. Even if I could get “Color Finesse” to run in FCP 6, the result would be what I already have, and would cripple an attractive feature integrated into the new software.

    Maybe it is just too soon to expect praise and excitement, but why are we not hearing an occasional ‘very nice,’ and at least one unnnnnnnnnbelievable on the fulfillment of this much awaited event?

    Multiformat timeline…Wow, Motion 3 with 3D Camera…Wow, Soundtrack Pro autoconform to changes made in FCP…Wow, FX Plugin speed…Wow, Motion tracking Text…Wow.
    No problems here and Im runiing on a 3year old G5 2-3.0 PPC….thats a big WOW as well.

    A downgrade? I don’t think so. I’ve tested Color Finesse and it’s not even close to Color. I’ve owned Final Touch HD for well over a year and if there wasn’t such an XML problem this past year with FCP, I would have been using it on every project. Now that seems to be fixed and it’s no longer $5,000 per license for HD.

    Color Finesse is very slow and limiting compared to what Color will bring to your workflow.

    If you read down below you see lots of posts regarding the MultiFormat timelines and the like. The thing about FCP 6 is that it is working out of the box and most of the “Wow” was shouted during NAB. Now folks are just getting it into their hands and it’s just business as usual.

    The only real gotcha that I see right now is that if you have an FCP 5 project with speed changes and filters, some of those might be a little screwed up when you launch that project in FCP 6. That’s the only thing holding me back at the moment from upgrading our two main suites. We just need to knock out a few more things and then we’ll upgrade.

    Hi jmf,
    I’m working as video editor since 22 years and I haven’t had the chance yet to work in HD, so I’m an SD editor. I’ve never thought of any software to improve my quality of life. In fact new software just mean more learnning and more time practicing. However as I see the things, the video SD is over. Is just a mater of time the disapearing. Yes you can learn how to use new tools, but do not spect any new developement that open new fields and possibilities for this technology. I guess than in two or three years the manufacturers will simply stop producing SD equipment.
    I’m living in a country where the HD will still take at least five years to arrive (VCD is the national standard) but I’m trying to learn about HD because I want to be ready when the time will arrive.
    The “intelectual investment” needed in our job is constant, and I prefer invest in something with future. I’m already working with FC since four years and at the moment I see FC pointing to a very interesting future. I LOVE FC.

    I don’t think the potential of ProRes422 has been explored and realized yet. I believe it may ultimately be recognizd as the hot item to come out in FCS2 and I think that by this time next year, if not sooner, many of us may well be working in ProRes422 most of the time.

    I’m starting feel better. Walter’s description of “Color” is encouraging, even for those who are switching from “Finesse.” Has anyone noticed any speed enhancements? Rendering less necessary and when it is needed works faster would be nice.

    Your English is quite good! I can understand you perfectly well…. and I agree with you.

    For anyone wondering about FCS 2, let me say it another way: You’d be an fool NOT to do this upgrade. There’s just too many major improvements in this release to even think about not doing it.

    FCS2 had me at “The footage you are placing in this sequence is a different format from the sequence settings. Would you like to change the sequence settings to the correct format?”

    That gave me the vapors!

    And if that goose needed more sauce:

    Color = awesome color fx.

    STP/FCP omf ins/outs and hard limiting = goodbye protools, well, maybe not goodbye, but for sure me and protools are going to have an open relationship now.

    Motion = new templates and 3D stuff. I will now get off my butt and learn this program for more than just mockup graphics.

    Goodness, I need a cold shower!

    I agree with David 100%

    My upgrade arrives this friday and I will most certainly be capturing/working on every single project in Pro-Res 10-bit.

    Oh Man! Ive been exploring the 3D environment of Motion 3 and its hard tearing myself away
    to eat. Along the way Ive discovered a treasure chest of preset (font styles(gradiations ,etc)…font effects(animated glints) and swirly animated brush strokes. All of which are editable. The content included is dizzying! And Im sure Ive only scratched the surface…as my camera pulls back from a ECU of a rectangle of blinking boxes to reveal gradiated text that has its borders caressed by a white swirly…. WHEW!

    Mark, in fact what I meant is that since FC, the life of the video editor is much more easy. We can not spect from a FC’s version to the next a revolution but what is clear is that Apple is trying to give to the consumers the best that they can.
    If just a couple of years ago somebody would have tell me about the features of FC 6 I would simply have suggest him to stop drinking so much beer:-)
