  • It’s safe to upgrade to Tiger with Final Cut Pro 5.1

Since the release of Tiger a couple of month ago, I’ve been tempted to upgrade my G4 (Mirror door) Dual 1.7mghz that have been running Final Cut Pro 5.1 with Panther without any flaws or problems. Can someone tell me if its SAFE TO UPGRADE TO TIGER AND if there’s any upgrade instructions I have to follow to do a proper Tiger upgrade path. I work with this machine everyday and I really want to upgrade to Tiger but only if you guys tell me it’s safe.

You’re definitely running FCP 5.0.4 at the most. 5.1 just came out last week as a universal version.

It’s been safe really since about a month or so after Tiger came out. The biggest thing is you need to allocate 2 or 3 days to fully install and test your system. You need to do what’s called a Clean Install at the very least of the OS or better yet, an Erase and Install of the OS. That is, erase your harddrive and start over with the new OS. From everything I’ve seen, this results in the most stable system. What I did on both of my G5’s here was to install a secondary internal harddrive and I have Tiger running on one and Panther still running on the other, though we haven’t touched Panther in about three months or so, so we’ll probably erase those drives shortly.

Do not simply copy your apps over to another drive and then copy them back, they really should be re-installed after a new OS update.

The basic procedure I follow is back up anything you need to save off your harddrive.

Install the Tiger Disk and perform an Erase and Install. That will erase your harddrive and install the OS.

Run Software Update and allow it to update everything.

    Restart the Machine

Install Final Cut Pro (or Studio)

    Run Software Update.

    Restart the Machine.

Launch each application and ensure they all start correctly.

Now install each additional application you have, updating, and launching each as you go.

Don’t forget to repair permissions at the end of all the installs. Kind of cleans house a little and gets everything in order.
