It is worth it right now to expend in a 570/580/680 ?
I’m tire of reviwing benchmarks, forums, opinions and so many thoughts about wich is better. This time, right now, I have the money for either 570/580/ and even the 680 4gbs wich seems to be not so better than the 580 in some exclusive pro-davinci benchemark…(how it is possible a 580 bits a 1500 cuda cores card in playback with some nodes? don’t ge it..)
Can anyone tell me if is worth it to buy one of those cards? or is better to wait at least 3er quater to get a titan or whatever be a better value-performance.. I think I’m going to expend an amount of money in an old famous card and sooner I’ll regret this decision.
I have not xpansion chassis.. just a mac 3,1 2008 2.4 x 2 16gb ram gt120+Q4000, davinci 9.3 raid SAS 4TB. And waiting to get the new blackmagic extreme 6gbs. Working mostly with 1920×1080 ProRes 4444 ALexa footage

6 months from now you will post a similar question: “Should I invest in this old Titan when the Titan 2 is coming out in a few months?”
This will never stop with technology. There’s always something newer/better/cheaper on the horizon. A 570, 580 or 680 card will be faster than your Q4000. So your investment will start paying off for you right now. I have the 570 in my home computer and a 580 in my work computer (they’re very similar in performance). They’re both awesome and way better than the overpriced Q4000.

Thx Eric. I agree with you, that’s why I always wait a little bit until I have something in-between when a changing is coming up…
So do you think is better to go with the 580 or 570 but no the 680?My real and eternal concern is the playback (with nodes)…as many here. So which one should I pick up?

GTX580 3GB, modified so it can run on internal power from the Mac Pro. The standard GTX580 requires more power than a Mac Pro can provide.

Standard EVGA 5903GB runs fine in the MacPro I have seen it working fine in multiple boxes I have used at studios also the 6804GB card works fine as well – just dont try to use the quadro as well for GUI or you might run into power issues.

sorry Andrew, you mentioned “Standard EVGA 5903GB” was a mistake ? or I can actually use this 590 card? maybe I confuse but, when you say standard is a PC base? or non’overclocked? Just to understand: can I use a PC card without any modification and make it work with ML 1.8.3?

type my apologies – the standard pc non-overclocked EVGA 5803GB or 6804GB both work fine in a macpro with 10.8.x – don’t bother using a separate gui card the benefits are like 2-3% increased.

Thx Andrew. final question, whats the difference between the Flashed 580 vs the Pc estandard in terms of performance? I understand that the main diference is to be bootable in mac but and red something about the full advantage of the x16 bandwidth..
So make me think is important to go with the flashed card from mcvids?
