it all seems smoother
Posted by James Ewart on October 28, 2012 at 8:56 ammaybe I did not have enough RAM (8GB) but the timeline operation was always a bit clunky until 10.0.6…it all seems to move about more smoothly now for me anyway. It just seems to work better…my imagination?

October 28, 2012 at 2:20 pmNo.
Things do seem faster, and I think it has to do with less animations. For example, when ripple deleting there’s much less sliding things in to place, and more moving things in to place.
I do find that new projects are faster than old projects. I don’t know why that is, perhaps it has to do with the compund clip structure change (which is definitely for the better) or other structural enhancements.

October 28, 2012 at 2:26 pmslightly miss “export using compressor” settings but probably better practice to use Compressor anyway. Still massively miss being able t export a reference (non self contained) movie and use that for creating copies with stream clip.

The new Share menu is a bit better in my opinion.
You can still use Compressor settings. Click the Share button, Click “Add Destination”, click “Compressor Settings” and choose the setting you want. Then that setting is stored in the share menu for next time. Easy.

Yep, FCPX works differently in this regard. The trade off is not rendering before export unless absolutely necessary. It’s very similar to Adobe Premiere in this way.

October 28, 2012 at 3:29 pmThanks for that…yes I agree and it seems to be located in a better place.
ahh “add destination” I never would have guessed that was the route for creating a new export option thank you very much for that.

October 28, 2012 at 3:34 pmI notice Adobe have a 40% off offer again since 10.0.6 came out. I missed the initial 50% off when FCPX version 1 arrived because I applied to late. Bu I have to thank Adobe for that because I never would have persevered with FCPX had they left it running. Just wonder if they are getting a little nervous there now…because I think we are getting there with FCPX. I even opened some titles in Motion and managed to adjust them for what I needed and then saved back to FCP…that’s major for me as I am really just a film editor type editor and composting and effects have always been a bit beyond me.
Thanks Jeremy for all your input and patience on my journey with X…if ever you are in UK I owe you a beer.

No worries! I can tell you are giving it an honest to goodness try.
I’m not saying everyone will like it, but you do have to spend time with it.
Adobe is doing good work. We use parts of the CS quite a bit, so it’s a no brainer for us.

October 28, 2012 at 4:46 pmI haven’t switched to anything full time. Still doing paid work on fcs3.
We use adobe products a lot, just haven’t switched to Pr. We are still weighing all the options, and waiting for further hardware and software development from everyone.

October 28, 2012 at 5:04 pm…just done a small job with FCPX. I don’t want to go back to rendering…that was the big thing for me from the start because I am so impatient.

Exactly! Rendering stinks.
