  • Issue with recording to a AJHD1200A

Hi there and thanks in advance.

I have a AJHD1200A in house to master some shows. I can pull footage, black and code and view tapes, so the deck is working. However, when I go to drop my timeline into the edit to tape window, nothing happens. The edit to tape function will black and code, and I have deck control, but it won’t go into either insert or assemble mode. I have no issue when the sytems is hooked up to a pvw2800. I also have tried both Sony and Panasonic VTR control modes. I can record the timeline, manually, so I know it’s not an issue with the HD-SDI input.

I’ve tried searching the boards but haven’t comeup with a similar post. I am running v5.1.4 and a Mac G5.

    Thanks again,

    Mike

You CANNOT control the 1200A via RS-422 when editing back to tape. You can only control it via Firewire. Don’t ask me why. Panasonic explained to me that the 1200A “Only has one set of electronics so the RS-422 is for playback control only.” Nope, no clue what that means.

If you do not have the Firewire board on that machine, you cannot control it during an Edit to Tape. Keep in mind that what you’re really doing is a “controlled crash” recording on that machine so ONLY Assemble Edit will be available to you and should only do a single edit point at the head of the tape. You should never make an edit anywhere within the tape or you will have a control track break.

Also keep in mind that due to the Firewire control, this deck is not frame accurate and will drift anywhere from 12 – 25 frames off your set In Point. The only good news is that it is consistent so once you figure out the offset on this particular machine, you can make adjustments to your Edit point to ensure your show will start at the appropriate TC.

I owned that very deck for over 2 years and have since replaced it with a 1400 just so we can have frame accurate RS-422 control during Edit to Tape.

    Walter,

Many thanks. Now I know why I prefer Sony.

You’re welcome. But I still hate Sony and prefer Panasonic to them anyday. 🙂

Try out the 1400, Panasonic corrected all the shortcomings of the 1200A.
