  • Issue with green screen clips

Posted by Elisa Simone on July 19, 2013 at 6:24 pm

Using Premiere Pro CS5.5 on a PC. Two video cards Nvidia Geforce 210 and Nvidia Geforce GT240, 8 GB Ram, Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q8300 2.50GHz

There are many long clips with a talking head with green screen which have been keyed out using Ultra Key. The effect is pretty good. The clips have been repositioned to one side.

The problem is there are lines that appear occasionally on the right hand side at the edges of the clips as pictured in the photo. This is only seen during playback and also after rendering and exporting.

I’ve tried the following with no success: added another Ultra Key effect, cropped the clips, used a mask (made in photoshop and then used the Track Matte Key), used a Garbage Matte, installed Quicktime, reduced the scale size of the clips (at 50% the line went away), none of which worked.

I used replace clip with After Effects and used Keylight, which did the trick, but the clips are way too long up to 20mins and AE can’t handle them. There are also too many clips so AE keeps crashing. I’d rather stay away from AE if at all possible.

The clips were filmed as 1080p and are all full HD 1920 x 1080 25fps and so is the sequence. Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated!

I would think that the Crop Effect from the Effects panel should do the trick. It seems that you’re just seeing some artifacting from the edge of the frame when you move the clip over.

I tried the Crop Effect, but the issue persists. Any other ideas?

What order are your effects in? Do you have the Crop above the Keyer, or vice versa? Maybe just changing the order of effects will do the job. This should be working…

You are a genius! Changing the order of the effects worked! I don’t know why I didn’t think of that. Thank you so much!

Just wish that it had occurred to me sooner – it would have saved you some time. By putting the Crop above the key, it removed some pixels on the edge of the frame, which weren’t green, then the Keyer was able to take care of the rest.
