is this a good monitor
Posted by Craig Alan on January 12, 2011 at 6:39 pmPanasonic TH-42PH20U 42″ HD Plasma TV

primarily for displaying student videos for group evaluation. Would like it to display accurate colors and accurate exposure levels.
Would not mind if it double as a monitor for editing but not the primary use.

January 12, 2011 at 6:57 pmIt’s a great monitor, especially for the price. Mine is calibrated and you’d be surprised how close it is to an expensive broadcast monitor. Feeding it signal via HDMI is a real pleasure…

January 12, 2011 at 7:26 pmDavid, do you know what the difference is between the TC class and the TH class Panasonic monitors?

January 12, 2011 at 7:29 pmHeck, the TC looks a whole lot better to me… If I were buying I’d go for that one.

January 12, 2011 at 10:31 pmThanks David,
Did you use the built in calibration tools or a third party option?
IOW how did you calibrate it?

January 12, 2011 at 11:24 pmI hired a pro Craig. I will say that I had it pretty darned close myself before he touched it. BTW, these newer Panasonic plasmas come very close to accurate right out of the box anyway, especially when fed via HDMI.

January 13, 2011 at 3:03 amThis one is full 1920×1080, I have the 50′ in my living room and love it.
But the first one has impact resistant glass which might be better in a classroom situation. 🙂

Especially if some of the kids are packing firearms.

January 13, 2011 at 2:18 pmThe TH-42PH20U boasts the HDMI, Component, DVI, PC and RS-232 but also allows addition of additional mounting boards via the Slot 2.0 Function, developed to defeat obsolescence and promote expandability.
Please correct my impressions. But Pana has a pro line of monitors that do not have tuners and a consumer line of TVs that do. The pro line is built more rugged, heavier, less tip prone. I also think there are more controls for calibration. I’ve owned the consumer line and the picture and black levels are great but limited controls for calibration.
I think the monitor I asked about is in the pro line though BH does call it a “TV” so I’m confused.
If no one knows I’ll call panasonic.
