  • Is there any shortcut to open layer/layers expressions?

Posted by Pablo Ferreyra on October 4, 2020 at 12:04 am

Whenever I want to see the current keyframes in a layer I have it selected and press U. Is there any similar way to do the same but to show expressions of that layer?

I find very annoying having to get there only using the mouse. Especially if I don’t quite remember the property exactly and/or it is nested. Aside from that, I end up opening the whole set of properties and if it is something like Particular, lots of not keyed or not expression…ed properties will take space in the timeline.

    (Googling didn’t help)

    Thanks!

Yes. Press the E key twice to reveal expressions on the selected layer(s).

To add on with related shortcuts to Walter’s answer –

    1) u – single “u” displays properties with keyframes

    2) uu – double tap “uu” to display all properties wits values that have changed, relative to their default values

    3) ALT + u – this shortcut displays properties with Expressions and Keyframes

    4) e – single “e” displays effects applied to layers

All shortcuts are contextualized to one or more layers being in a selected state or when no layer is selected, AE applies the shortcut to ALL layers.

And is there any way to expand the expression window to the size of it’s contents, or to open the script in a separate window…? It’s really annoying how it will only display a couple of lines at a time. I know you can move your timeline up so you can pull down on the corner of the window to expand it, but when you have to do this just to edit a single value every time it gets tedious. There has to be a better way to view and edit the expressions…

And why doesn’t the expression pick-whip open up layer properties of transform or effects!?

Now you have to open up the property you want to link to before you grab the pickwhip.

Both great ideas. You can file (and vote on) feature requests here:
