  • Is there another cable to connect a Canon XL2 besides firewire?

i wasnt sure which forum i should post this topic in…

I’ve been using a firewire cable to connect my video cameras and capture footage. my computer recently broke, and i had to replace it. it, for some reason, has NO firewire port. i have a canon xl2. it has like 6 USB ports and some HDMI ports, among other things (the new comp, not the camera).

before i try contacting customer service, paying a restocking fee, etc., i was wondering if they make other cables for capturing video nowadays besides firewire?

Nope. Capturing DV as DV can only happen via firewire. And Avid, if it lacks hardware like Nitris or Mojo or AJA IO Express…only captures via 1394 (another name for firewire).

If you lack firewire, then the only other option is to capture with an Avid that has the hardware to connect to the camera via Component. You won’t get timecode…so if you lose the footage, or need to recapture for any reason, you cannot unless you manually do it, and rebuild the edit.

Get a firewire card…surely you have expansion slots.
