  • Is there a way to put your render files in a different directory

Posted by Eric Susch on November 9, 2009 at 4:04 pm

I’m trying to set up my audio and video renders to go into a directory different on my RAID than my audio and video capture. The problem is that FCP won’t let me. I get an error “Unable to set scratch disk. That disk is already set as a scratch disk.” Does anyone know a way around this?

    Hi Eric,
In the Preferences > Scratch Disk, you can set were to keep separated renders, thumbnails, wave-form cache, etc.

Right. Final Cut Pro/System Settings…/Scratch Disks.

So you aren’t getting an error message when you try to put your capture and render files in different directories on the same disk?

    Forgot to mention:
    FCP 7.0.1
    OSX 10.6.1

    Hi Eric,
Here I have the media in a HD and the renders in another.

I only have one media drive, an external RAID. I obviously want to keep both the digitized footage and the renders on the RAID for speed but I want to separate them into different directories so that my backup strategy is simpler. There’s no need to back up the renders.

I’m surprised no one else has hit this problem before.

    Hi Eric,
Now I understand what you mean.
FC don’ lets you set the same HD twice as Scratch Disk.
