Is there some way to duplicate a clip or a transition by dragging it with the mouse?

Like a CTRL-DRAG or something like that which will copy while dragging?

If I have a transition right in front of me and I want to place another a second away, would be easier if I could just somehow drag a copy of it to the new position. Same thing with a clip..

Yup. But annoying that when you want to do it for a clip, like in FCP 7, and hold down the shift key to keep it inline vertically, that the shift key actually negates the copy. Yet another hot key combo from FCP 7 that is destructive in X. Another destructive favorite is W. Trying to turn on and off the wireframe in X never works. Then later you discover new clips all over your timeline. Well, the same clip usually. Muscle memory can be hell.
