  • Is there a way to change the opacity throughout a stroke?

Posted by Daniel Haskett on November 14, 2007 at 1:11 pm

    hi there

basically ive got a stroke that draws on but i was wondering if its possible to have different levels of opacity throughout the stroke, i know u can keyframe the opacity but it changes it to the whole stroke. i want the stroke to like gradually fade away from the beginning, so theres like a trail being left and it fades away…? i know u could keyframe the end/start, but i wanted to use opacity for a more subtle effect.

    cheers

Try the vegas effect (Effect > Generate > Vegas) instead of the stroke effect. That allows you to control the opacity at the start and end.

    forget the stroke effect altogether.

Watch this tutorial for all the info you need:

    Hey Aharon,

Thanks, thats a great tutorial, really helped.

I’m actually trying to do the thing with the sign, you know you show were the lights flash around around a sign? ive got it so that the lights are there, but i had 2 questions –

when you change the rotation, its kind of confusing because when i did it maybe 4x 100, it moves around, but then i increased it to 10x 100 and it barely moved….how do i get it so they move around at a good speed…why does it do this?

secondly, is there a way so they wipe on to the screen, so like the dots appear one after the other until they are all on screen? ive been playing with the different settings but cant work out how to…i spose i could just use a mask otherwise?

any tips would be greatly appreciated!

    thanks

[DanielHaskett] “when i did it maybe 4x 100, it moves around, but then i increased it to 10x 100 and it barely moved….”

It probably was moving, but so fast that it appears to barely move. I know that sounds weird, but have you ever seen how helicopters blades or wheel’s hubcaps seem to run slowly or even in reverse when they are rotating very very quickly – it’s the same sort of effect. Reduce the amount of rotation

[DanielHaskett] “secondly, is there a way so they wipe on to the screen, so like the dots appear one after the other until they are all on screen?”

Sure – NOW you want to use the stroke effect. You cna either duplicate the layer and use the stroke effects as a track matte – animating on the stroke which causes the reveal – or you can use it directly on the layer and use the stroke option called “reveal original image.”
