  • Is there a standard for DVD Menus? – 16×9 or 4×3

Posted by Neal Barlow on July 9, 2012 at 8:06 pm

    Greetings,

Here is something I have been struggling with for a while. I shoot 100% 16×9, and most of the time 24p for my clients and my own projects. When I work in Architect, I am torn between authoring the menu in 16×9 or 4×3. When I know the intended party has stepped into the 16×9 world, I make the menu for 16×9, but when I shoot a Dance Recital I usually make it 4×3 knowing that if someone has a 16×9 TV, it will stretch to fit if needed. My question is, is there a industry standard for format currently. How does everyone else approach the issue?

    Much Thanks,

We’re not going back to 4:3, so I push the 16:9 format. They’ll get used to it.

That’s how I have always felt. Just wanted to hear it from someone else. Thanks!

    4:3? What’s that? 😉

Do any of your clients still have a CRT TV or a TV with tubes and valves? 😉

The funny thing is…yes they do. Again, I appreciate your humor, which just reinstates to me that everything is 16×9 now. It’s how I felt, but sometimes I fell more about please the client, rather then educating the client and trying to make something that is set for future/present specs, rather then the past.

    Hello Neal,

I can sense that you are generous in giving solution/tips to people and I wonder if you could give me an advice as to what type or what things do we need for our basketball program. We support groups that do basketball events. With this, we would like to record the entire game for the day (5 games), edit and convert it to dvd. With this, what type of video camera and other things do we need? Will the external drive be enough to store all videos (what kind)? Also, we are using an imac computer and final cut? is this enough?

    Thank you.
    Mary
