Another newbee question from an ex FCP user…
I like to use the V and U keys to trim an edit but I didn’t find anything similar in Premiere. Did I overlook something?

In FCP, the V key selects the nearest edit point. The U key toggles between ripple outgoing, ripple incoming and roll edits.

Premiere Pro doesn’t quite work like that. You need to work in the Trim monitor for ripple and roll edit trims with a keyboard shortcut. Type T for the Trim monitor. There are extend edits, though. I wrote up the keyboard trimming options in this blog post: https://blogs.adobe.com/kevinmonahan/2011/07/01/keyboard-shortcuts-trimming-with-premiere-pro-cs4-cs5-cs5-5/

All the Premiere Pro keyboard shortcuts are here: https://help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/WS1c9bc5c2e465a58a91cf0b1038518aef7-7c2ea.html

If would like to have keyboard based trimming in the timeline, please make a feature request: https://www.adobe.com/go/wish

You can use Page Up and Page Down (at least that’s what I use) to go to next or previous edit point on selected tracks. This is a bit annoying – if all of your tracks are not selected, and you try to go to the next edit point, you don’t get the next edit point, you get the next edit point on the tracks that are targeted. I find that I spend a lot of time targeting and untargeting tracks in Premiere.

As for keyboard trimming, that’s a good link. Kevin.

Learning all the time… I already thought that the up and down arrow didn’t work, but now I see that I have to target the track. Thanks again

[Itamar Kool] “I already thought that the up and down arrow didn’t work”

The up and down arrow doesn’t move between edits (as in FCP) but advances the timeline one section at a time (something like page-forward, page-backward). This bothered me at first but after a while using page-up/-down makes good sense for this function, as you can also use shift+home or shift+end to move to the beginning or end of a selected clip. In other words, all your navigation-via-clips is done with those four keys (end, home, pgup, pgdown)
