  • Is there a better way? (applying effects after FCPX has done it’s color correction)

I recall this has been discussed but I can’t find a relevant thread.

My problem: I want to add gaussian blur to a clip after FCPX has done it’s color correction. It’s important since I’m using masks which otherwise creates odd effects.

My solution: first make the color correction (containing my masks) and then create a compound clip. The effect (Gaussian blur) can now be applied “on top of” the new compound clip, forcing the color correction to be applied first.

    More info:
This is a clip that has gaussian blur applied after I’ve made a compound clip:

And here is the look when I’m not creating a compound clip at first. Look at the edges of the two monitors on the wall. (The right monitor differs in content between the images – I accidentally copied two different frames for this post.) :

… and these are the settings for the above (faulty) image and the masked areas:

Is there another way or do I have to use compound clip?

    Best,
    Petter

Try adding the blur to an empty text layer to be used as an ‘adjustment’ layer.

You can probably even publish an adjustable blur layer from Motion of you’d like. That way you’d have a preset to refer back to.

    Thanks, thats a good idea.

I was hoping there was a way to force effects being calculated after the standard color correction, but I guess it’s just wishful thinking. To be forced to use an “adjustment layer” or to create a compound clip when using masks and effects together seems a bit awkward from a workflow point of view.

But at least it works 🙂

No way to manually adjust the rendering stacking order that I know of.

At least with adjustment layers, you have all controls available to you instead of partially buried in a compound.
