  • Is there “1” video format to use on desktop and mobile devices?

Posted by David Dinenna on August 25, 2011 at 3:51 pm

I’m trying to find a video format that will work on all desktops as well as mobile. I usually use the mp4/H264 format for mobile but this doesn’t work on PC desktops using the WM player. Does anyone know of “1” video format that I can use?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Quicktime is available for Windows and it will play mp4. I am grappling with the same issue myself while distributing football game videos to the coaching staff and select parents. Chose to encode in a variety of codecs and let people use what works for them. Easy to do with AME.

There isn’t a magic bullet solution here — that’s why there are so many options! YouTube and Vimeo are often a good bet, but then you don’t host the video yourself. When in doubt, I will compress with iPhone settings (H264 mov) which most players seem to read.
