Is Sony going to “renting” software
Posted by Scott Francis on April 16, 2016 at 2:49 pmJust got an email from Videoguys, and they are selling a “one year subscription” to Catalyst for $199. Does this mean Sony is going the way of Adobe? Anyone have info on this?

April 16, 2016 at 5:49 pmOn the Sony CS website, the Catalyst Production Suite is still available for purchase for 260 pound. No word about renting.
I also can’t find Sony Creative Software Inc on the list of exhibitors at NAB 2016. I would expect them to be there if they would start shifting to a renting model. Anyhow, I did not get that e-mail about renting….

April 16, 2016 at 6:34 pmHope not, Only see this at Videoguys, no hint about subscription based
payment on the Sony site….. But then again, if it is being offered as
a yearly subscription over at Videoguys, wouldn’t that concept be
coming from Sony themselves then!Steve Rhoden (Cow Leader)

April 16, 2016 at 6:50 pmBut 200 dollar for one year is very expensive compared to 400 dollar for a life-long ownership. Who is going to do that?
That would suggest that the normal purchase is going to disappear soon, just as recently happened with the lifelong subsription on Red Giants Universe. Just disappeared.Theo

April 16, 2016 at 7:30 pmThese major software companies are starting to get carried away and
becoming greedy and unfair!
They are all watching Adobe and seeing the tons of cash Adobe is raking in
under their ransom payment schemes, they too want a piece of the pie.Steve Rhoden (Cow Leader)

April 16, 2016 at 9:56 pmIf VideoGuys is selling subscriptions then it appears that at least one way to get Catalyst Suite is to rent it.
Hopefully we’ll find out more on Monday which is the start of the NAB 2016 show floor. That’s usually when announcements are made.

April 18, 2016 at 3:04 pmI asked Videoguys about this annual renting of Catalyst. This is their reply:
“Sony just announced the Subscription over the Perpetual license. If you give me a call today at 800-xxx-xxxx ext xxx there is a good chance I can still get the order filled at $399 for the perpetual license. I can of course also offer 5% off that price with the NAB2016 coupon we are currently offering. Once they change their system I can’t promise anything.”
