  • Is my machine now too old for Premiere 2020?

Posted by David Cabestany on February 26, 2020 at 4:14 am

I recently opened a project I normally work on my newer iMac Pro on my old MacBook Pro (early 2013) and the screen is all glitchy. In fact, is so bad that even other applications will show this problem as long as Premiere is running in the background.
It renders the machine completely unusable unless I close Premiere Pro 2020.

After a lot of trial and error I determined that the issue happens when the more powerful graphics card is enabled (this machine has two cards), the offending one is an NVIDIA Ge Force GT 650M which runs on the PCIe bus.

I don’t use this machine a lot anymore, but every now and then I need to modify projects on the go, but not enough that justifies buying a new laptop.

Is there anything I can do to keep this one working for a little more with CC2020?

    Thanks in advance,
    D.

This is almost definitely GPU issue. Apple stopped supporting NVIDIA cards some years back (which was a big shame) so you won’t get any help from them. If you go to the NVIDIA website you can download the latest Cuda drivers and see if that resolves the issue. Failing that, in the Project Settings/General, where you see the GPU list, if you disable your GPU and use ‘Software Only’ you will lose the GPU acceleration but get a more stable system without weird glitches.

    Hope that helps;)

    Thanks, John.

There is no newer driver for my card but I disabled the GPU as you suggested and it’s working now. Reading the minimum requirements of the latest Premiere version I can see that my card is obsolete and the only option would be to upgrade it.

    Best,
    David.
