Yesterday, I made a couple of Quicktime files from a short 1080p XDCAM sequence in FCP. The first was a full-rez file exported directly from the timeline. For the second one, I made an Apple TV HD version (H.264) in Compressor using the standard settings. Then I played them both back on my 1.5 ghz Powerbook G4. The image looked great on both the computer and my HD monitor, but both files only played at 15 fps. The original files are 30 fps. Is my Powerbook just not up to the task? Will the newer Macbook Pros play these properly? Does an Apple TV have a heftier processor than my G4?

Yeah, Apple suggests a dual-chip 2.0 GHz G5 computer to keep up with that frame size at 24 fps. 30 fps would probably need even MORE power.

So your computer is a bit behind that curve. More info here:

Things like iPods and Apple TVs are not more powerful than your computer, but they are specially built with hardware that’s made to decode that kind of video. So they can do more with less, so to speak.

Thanks Jeff. Wanna buy a Powerbook?

I forgot to mention that I was playing the files off a firewire 400 drive (7200 rpm). Could this be a contributing factor as well? The data rate for the full-rez version is 35 mbs and the Apple TV version is around 5000 kbs.
