  • Is My Current PC Plus Vegas 9 Upto The HD Job?

Posted by Phil Davies on June 23, 2009 at 6:19 pm

I’m about to start a project that I want to film in HD – which I’ve never done before.

I’m upgrading to Vegas 9 and looking at Sony HDD camcorders that use the AVCHD format.

I’m not interested in creating bluray discs yet (I’m assuming I’ll have a PC powerful enough come that time) but I will need to create standard DVDs from the footage (max 1.5hr projects) and mini HD web videos (max 15min projects).

With this in mind do you think my PC will handle the editing process?

    – Core 2 Duo (2.1GHz)
    – 2GB RAM
    – Radeon X1600 grapgics card

    Thanks,

    Phil.

Yes, your pc can handle that processing, although your
graphics card has no effect when using Vegas.

And i would not advise you to get an HDD camcorder that uses
the AVCHD format. AVCHD can get a bit tricky on you, no
    need to complex the issue.

Thanks Steve good to know. Just to clarify…

Do you mean don’t get an *HDD* that uses AVCHD or any type of camcorder that uses AVCHD (i.e. mini DVD, flashmemory etc)?

Any reason in particular why it’s tricky?

    Thanks again.

Because AVCHD is a very highly compressed format, and needs
more processing power when editing…..i would suggest for you to
get an HDV Camcorder instead, can be HDD or tape based.

Your PC is up to the task, unless time is an issue and you need faster render turnaround times.

My experience is that Vegas Pro 8d handles previewing of AVCHD/HDV on the timeline better than Vegas Pro 9. I believe it has been noted on this forum elsewhere. I am not sure if it is a bug or an undocumented feature 🙂
