  • Is My Brand New SATA-Raid Array Dying?

Posted by Don Walker on February 28, 2007 at 3:16 pm

For the last couple of days FCP has been shutting down by itself, and at times showing me black instead of video. Sometimes just before doing this the picture will break up. I suspect my RAID (homebuilt by my VAR) but I’m not sure. My computer seems to run hotter than the other computers in our office. I was able to dump all my footage off the raid overnight, and I am about to buy Disk Warrior and run it. Any other thoughts?
The computer also does not like to run jobs in Compressor anymore. It keeps putting itself to sleep. All the Power saver options are set to never.

Have you checked under system preference > energy saver to make sure “Put the hard disks to sleep when possible” is not checked? Sometimes this can cause problems.

[Don Walker] “My computer seems to run hotter than the other computers in our office.”

That’s a very hot computer, you need to keep air moving across it at all times if possible.

As for your raid, sounds like it’s going to sleep. Check your Energy Settings and make sure the Computer is set to Never fall asleep and you UNcheck “Put Hard Drive to sleep when possible”
