  • Is it worth it to Upgrade a G4 to run Motion

Posted by Andrew Watt on July 20, 2005 at 8:53 pm

We just upgraded to the FCP Studio Suite. Unfortunetely our video card to old to allow us to install Motion 2. My question is, would it be worth it for me to upgrade the video card on a G4 to run motion or will it run so slow(on a G4) anyway that it wouldn’t be worth using. Anyone else out there running Motion from a G4?

Any suggestions on which card to get? It seems like most people are going with the ATI Radeon 9800. Thanks for your help.

If you can afford the upgrade to a new G5 and you need Motion’s capabilities it’s awesome. On the G4 not as much but still better than nothing.

If you’re earning enough money on the system and you really want to take advantage of Motion, then yes, upgrade. If you just want to use Motion from time to time, the G4 should be fine.

Regarding what card to get – the 256 MB NVidia 6800 Ultra seems to blast through most Motion projects nicely. On a sidenote it does add additional fan noise to your G5 all of the time. It’s not noisey and after a while I’ve stopped noticing it altogether.

The only downside is the loss of the a slot in the G5. I’ve just replaced my Ultra 6800 with an ATI x800XT to regain that slot.

That’s a good point Walter. Since they both cost around $500.00 maybe the ATI is the way to go. Does it also make that constant fan noise?

Love my x800. Don’t hear it, especially over the G5 fan which occasionally kicks in. Don’t work in the quietest ennvironment when doing MoGrfx.
