  • Is it safe to install older AE plugins on a new M2 mac?

Posted by Matthew Woods on August 9, 2023 at 6:27 pm

Does anyone here have experience with older plugins in the latest AE on a new Mac? I am setting up AE on my new M2 Max Mac. I own licenses of Red Giant Trapcode, and Magic Bullet Suites purchased from Red Giant. When I contacted Maxon who now owns Red Giant to find out if I could purchase native upgrades for them, and was told that they are now only available as part of a subscription to “Red Giant Complete.” I don’t want another subscription. If I install the old versions will they work under Rosetta? Will they effect the performance of AE if I am not actively using the plug-ins in my current project? Thanks, -Mat

Not sure if all the old plugins are compatible with the newer AE but when I install plugins on a newer version of Sony Vegas for example, they usually work for the newer versions of the applications you are installing it from if its an old plugins but its good you check with the owners of these plugins to make sure. Weird you have to get a subscription for it so maybe even installing these plugins will not always work. Ask to see if you have permission to use the old plugins from the original manufacturers just incase. Good luck! Let me know if you have other questions.

Matthew, here’s some documentation on running After Effects under Rosetta emulation:

To directly answer your question, if even one of your installed plugins is Intel-only, you have to run Ae under Rosetta emulation.
