July 2, 2006 at 10:05 pmalso, i can set up a project in sd, preview it through the m10u to a crt, then switch over to a hd project, and it’ll display one frame at a time. its a horrible way of doing it, but i gotta do what i gotta do.

July 2, 2006 at 10:50 pmThe only way you can view HDV to an external monitor is to get an HD capture card…or the Matrox MXO when it comes out. But then you need a monitor capable of reading an HD signal. Or a card capable of sending out an SD signal to an SD monitor (Kona 2, Kona 3, Decklink Extreme HD) . And know that the SD image is in no way accurate for color correction.
HD is a whole new monster.

sounds like the deck doesn’t have EE or it’s simply not set up as a pass through device for Firewire viewing.
I know on our 1200A DVCPro HD, monitoring through Firewire is simply not possible due to sync errors. If I send an HD-SDI feed to the deck, the image is fine, but not with Firewire.
As Shane said, HD capture card like the AJA Kona series is what you want.

July 3, 2006 at 8:55 amHDV doesn’t work like that as it is a MPEG 2 long GOP there are only 2 real frames for every second of video
it is very processor intensive and as such can’t be monitored via FW as you wish
a AJA card would offload the processing of the HDV signal and would allow you to monitor the video in realtime like the others saidDAVE at Movies Rock in Toronto

thanks for the info”The AJA cards? For HD work? Nope, they’re incredibly cheap. Go price an HD Avid and see what you can get for $3,000. If you’re working in HD, your first job should pay for the card.
