  • Is it possible to fade from one mask shape to the next?

    Hi there

I have keyframed a mask growing out and expanding, there is a keyframe every 2 frames, I have put each keyframe on HOLD because I dont like the way AE creates movement between the frames, however I would like to fade from one keyframe to the next if that is possible? I have tried just keyframing the opacity of the mask however that gets rid of the mask completely. I guess would I need 2 layers of the same mask, and fade between both?

    Thanks in advance!

    Here’s one possible recipe:

    • try precomposing your masked animation,
    • speed up the layer 200% so you have one mask-keyframe per frame.
    • render that comp with alpha to a movie
    • import the movie and use it as an aplha-trackmatte on the original non-masked layer,
    • stretch the alpha-movie 200% slower and enable frameblending.

    Here’s another:

    • pre-compose the masked animation
    • duplicate the layer and shift all the mask-keyframes one frame to the right
    • set both layers to opacity 50% and alpha-add mode
    • use that pre-comp as an alpha-tracmatte to the original footage.
