  • Is it possible to control video playback when applied to a card?

Posted by Adam Claude jones on July 27, 2009 at 11:18 pm

I have an animation where I’m trying to do sort of a compositing within C4D. The animation is a camera fly that ends inside a house. So I built the house in C4D and flew a camera till the window of the house. This is from a fully frontal perspective. Inside the house I set a video on a plane. So it looks like we are getting inside the house through the window. The thing is I need the video to start playing at the right time and not at the beginning of the animation. Is that possible? So far, for some reason I can’t get the video to playback at all. Normally I just go to the material texture and click on animate preview, but this is not working this time. But anyways, is it possible to get the video to start playing at the moment I want? Thanks.

Load your movie into the Colour-Channel / open the Animation-Tab /
Set Mode to Simple / Timing to Range / fill in Range Start and End /
If necessary change Movie Start and End Frame as well /
Open the Editor-Tab and check Animate Preview /
    Play your animation…

Thanks. But I’m a little lost here. You mean to open the animation menu on the top between functions and character?
Set mode to simple, do you mean set the play mode to simple?
The rest I didn’t find at all.

    Well, I am using Cinema 4D R11…

Create a Material and import your movie / in the Attributes-Manager click the Texture-Tab /
(should have the name of your movie file written on / that will open the Bitmap Shader)
Click that Animation-Tab and apply the above mentioned settings…

If you’re not using R11…?, some settings might look a little bit different, or have changed,
but as far as I remember, one could do this in any older version as well…

Thanks again. Now I found all the settings you mentioned.
But I can’t gt it to work. The video doesn’t play. I did all you said. I also tried setting the range start and end, then movie start frame and end frame and both together. The video doesn’t play. I’m sure I’m doing something wrong but I can#t figure what.

Well, works perfectly here… (make sure to check “Animate Preview”)
Movie files put a lot of “demand” on the system… (have you rendered your file out yet…?)
You might consider using an image sequence instead of the movie file…
(much gentler on the system and much better preview-replay in the viewport…)

I rendered a preview and the movie doesn’t play. The preview was set to full render so I guess it is not working?
Maybe it is down to the range start and end settings or the movie start frame and end frame settings? I just set the frame I wanted the movie to start and to end playing on those fields.

Well, can’t really say why it isn’t working at your side…?
Does the movie play in any other project from the start…?

If you like, here is a very short video-demonstration:
