  • Is FCP Scriptable?

Posted by Justin Ficklin on August 18, 2007 at 10:39 pm

Is there any way to record a set of actions in FCP? As an assistant editor, simple, repetitive tasks are a daily ritual and can be very time consuming. I’d love some way of scripting some of these actions like I’m able to do in Photoshop. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

FCP isn’t scriptable… but maybe if you post what these repetitive tasks are, we can come up with a better/faster workflow.

its not especially scriptable, although you can trigger import and export of XML’s using apple events

you can also use Apple’s UI scripting to take some control
    https://www.apple.com/applescript/uiscripting/

or you could look at something like xmedit’s Traffic app

    Thanks for your suggestions …

As an example, some of the duties include preparing/tweaking projects for editors with a set of detailed guidelines that are always followed in a certain order. Simple yet time consuming.

    These guidelines include:

    -Changing sequence settings
-Importing media into certain bins and the timeline
    -Rendering out sequences
    -Adjusting timings
    -Media management
-Saving a new version of the project

..The Traffic app seems vaguely helpful, but I’m not sure it’s as in depth as I’d like it to be. There’s no way of apple scripting any of this is there?

I use quickeys to do repetitive tasks in FCP. Helps a lot.
