is betasp a 16×9 format?
Posted by Ben Oliver on March 13, 2007 at 6:17 pmi need to get a minidv project of mine converted to betasp. The project is 16×9, should I send the post house my output that is 16×9, or should I black bar it?
it’s not an issue if it’s black barred, i guess what I am wondering, is, can betasp be 16×9?

March 13, 2007 at 6:44 pmAny format can be 16:9. If you dub your dv to Beta SP it will be anamorphic no different to the DV or any other format. What it won’t have is the electronic flag for widescreen.
I used to shoot with a DXCD35 and a PVV3 back end and had the camera set on 16:9.
Pal land or NTSC no difference.

You mean letterbox? Never heard the term “blackbar” before, best to use proper terminology when discussing issues here.

March 14, 2007 at 1:04 amRoddy, I have a DXC35wsl with the PVV3 back and have thought of shooting 16×9, but haven’t yet.
What problems or issues did you have to deal with when using Beta SP 16×9?
Whould it be of value to bump the BetaSP 16×9 up to DVCPro HD 16×9 ( or other HD format) for editing and distribution?
What camera are you using now and how does it compare to the DXC35wsl?

March 14, 2007 at 6:27 pmHi edit
Never had any problems but here in PAL land most SD TV is 16:9. I have done shoots for BBC on SP in 16:9 no problem. Most of my work is corporate and after edit I laterly mastered on to DVCAM. I may be wrong but I find Beta SP to be a lot more noisy, so I don’t know how that would look up-rezzed to HD.
I now shoot on DVCPRO 50 with the SPX800 (P2). I could never go back to tape.

To play back anamorphic video off a BetaSP deck you need to run it through a UFC or a ARC box. It’s a commonly requested format and done all the time.
I have never ever heard of “BlackBar” either.. Or that it’s ok to leave a dead girl in a frozen creek. But hey, your in Boston right? HaHa Wicked!! 😉
Cheers.
