  • Is AVID’s YCrCb 709 color space the same as Rec 709?

We’re editing in the YCrCb 709 color space. Is this the same as REC 709?

We’ve been asked to specify the color space for accurate DCP creation and YCrCB is not on the list. We need help translating AVID’s default color setting for the outside world.

We’re using AVID MC 8.8.4. Project is HD 1080P. Workflow is video mixdown to ProRes 422 HQ MXF, then export “same as source”.

Options for acceptable color spaces are:
    sRGB
    Rec709 2.2 gamma
    Rec709 2.35 gamma
    Rec709 2.4 gamma
    P3 DCI
    P3 D65

sRGB is obviously incorrect. Guessing Rec709 is the right translation but am unclear about which gamma setting is default for AVID YCrCb 709.

    Appreciate any insights, thanks.

That’s not so much a question of an Avid spec, but a monitoring spec. So did you color grade using a monitor calibrated to a 2.2 or a 2.4 gamma?
To the best of my knowledge, it is all a bit of a grey area, where fully controlled high end grading rooms tend to be set up with a 2.4 gamma, whereas 2.2 makes more sense in less ideal circumstances.

You should most probably be using Rec709 2.4 gamma.
