Is 720×480 at 24fps good for widescreen DVD?
Hi,
I’m making an animation (no real camera footage) and it is to be burned on a DVD for playing on a common widescreen LCD TV like Sony Bravia etc. Rendering higher resolutions and frames needs more processor power so I read that you can create videos at 720×480 at 24fps. 24fps or 25fps is the maximum I can afford to produce the animation at and I have to avoid using bigger resolutions.If I publish the video to a DVD at 720×480 and 24fps; will it playback properly on a modern DVD player plugged into a widescreen LCD TV? Thanks 🙂

Yes, DVD (SD) specs are Mpeg2 720×480, Now, if you want widescreen you must create in anamorphic.
That being said, if the playback is on a HD-TV, then you should go big or go home (JMO)
Create it in full HD 1920×1080 29.97i or 24p

Make sure that frame rate is actually 23.976 and not 24 for NTSC DVD playback.

Thanks for the reply guys 🙂 If I go for 720×480, I can only render in 24 or 25 and not decimal values – renderer won’t allow that. Anyway, 24fps video can be converted to 23.976, right? Of course with a little change in time duration which is Ok. And the 2nd question is, will it play fine on an HDTV and look at least acceptable if not pristine on a 32″ screen?

If 24 is the only option you have then go for it, but make sure to preview the final result. What you want to look for is if the audio remains in sync, especially as you near the end of your video.
If you’re going to NTSC DVD, by the way, 720×480 is in fact the ONLY size you can use. Blu-Ray allows for larger resolutions, if you have it. A lot of people play DVDs on HD screens and don’t know the difference. But if they were to see it at 720P or 1080P, then they’d start to notice….

If you are rendering your animation to a frame sequence (which you should be), the later conversion to MPEG is where you specify the actual frame rate. You could also use 29.97 FPS (for NTSC).
