iphone4 video in FCP7 for youtube export
Hi, I have an iPhone4 video that i just wanted to cut a section out of in FCP7 and then export it for youtube. It is a 36 min video. When i import the iPhone clip into FCP7 and drop it into the fresh timeline, it asks if i want to change the sequence setting to match the clip settings, and i say yes. Even then, when i drop the clip into the timeline it still has the red render bar over it! i don’t know why. Finally I gave up trying to conform the sequence settings to the clip settings, and i went ahead and just rendered it. It took a couple hours to render! now everything is fine and i am going to export. What are the best settings to export for YouTube?
by the way, i did not transcode this footage, i am leaving it in h.264 since that is what youtube likes. I know FCP doesn’t like h.264 but all i am doing is cutting a snippet out from the middle of the video, i am not doing any other editing. So i figure it should be fine.This is an amazing amount of complicated work to go through just to cut a few seconds out from an iPhone video before uploading it to youtube.

You might want to explore other editing software for this, like Premiere Pro. Premiere Pro works with H.264 fine, and requires no rendering. And has export settings for YouTube. FCP 7 really needs you to convert before exporting. If you try to export H.264 from FCP, you might get sync issues as well.

You can also work with this natively in FCX…Apple realised that people might want to work with video shot on their phones, so it made it work with that format.

if you have FCP7, then you should have Quicktime Player 7.
all you really need to do is to open the clip in that, mark in and out points,
copy, open a new document, paste, and save.this will give you the cleanest version with no recompressing (i think)

Compressoror in FCP7, DONT put the clip on a timeline, just mark in and out points in the viewer, then export.

Yea, I would invest $4.99 in iMovie for iPhone and trim the clip and post to YouTube right from your iPhone. No need to get FCP 7 involved at all.

No need for iMovie. Just trim it and upload it from photos right on the phone.

Hmm… I’ve never thought of using Photos for trimming video. I’ll have to check it out.
