    Hi Editors:
I’m trying to pin down an approximate street retail price on the AJA Io HD external FireWire 800 box. Can someone more knowledgeable than I give me the heads up on approximate price of this device ?

    Thanks,

    Mark J.

    Hi Shane:
Thanks for the heads up on the street price of the AJA box 🙂 Ouch ! I will also look at the Kona boards as well. Still, the AJA Io HD is way cheaper than an Avid Adrenaline, which only works on select configurations. The AJA certainly contains more options than the over priced Avid Mojo. HD is already a big one up over Mojo.

GO to http://www.aja.com and look at the I/O HD…see what it can do. Up/down/cross convert, analog and SDI in/out..capture time code from a camera. Hardware encode of ProRes. Works on several machines because it has one simple firewire 800 connection. Works on a laptop.

$3000 is NOTHING for a box like this. I am running a Kona 3 now, but I swear I might get that i/o HD to replace it. Because I don’t work with uncompressed HD and don’t plan on it in the future.

    Hi Shane:
Yes. I already did go over and check it out. This is one very impressive little box. I too, don’t deal with uncompressed HD. As I wrote in my earlier post, this is a very reasonable price point and definitely a more flexible solution. I need the RS-422 big time to batch cap alot of BetaCam SP tapes ond VITC TC striped S-VHS masters and output those to SD DVD.

    Hi Mark

If you’re working with a Mac Pro, I would also consider the Decklink Multibridge Pro, Even if you don’t want the uncompressed HD it offers, it’s half the price of the AJA IO HD, and supports 3D LUTS for monitor setup, Dual Link, cross conversion on output etc. Very pleased with mine – totally future proof. Just doesn’t work with a laptop or offer Prores ‘acceleration’.

I also work with the AJA IO HD, and it’s a great box from a great company – but when I had to lay down my own money for a desktop, it had to be the Multibridge Pro.

$2999.95 according to B&H Photo. I don’t purchase from them, but that’s an easy website to get pricing.

The one thing to consider, if you’re comparing the Io HD to the Kona 3 (not the Kona LH). They are essentially identical with the exception that the Kona 3 support uncompressed HD and even 2K formats. Even though you don’t expect to go to that level, it’s nice to know you can.

However, if you are considering a G5, then absolutely go with the Io HD because the same Kona board will not work in the PCI-X G5’s and the new PCIe Mac Pros. The Io HD will be able to work with all the machines since it’s an external box.

You can’t go wrong with any AJA product and especially if you’re spending your own money on this box, you want a proven broadcast centric company with solid tech support. We run two Kona’s, an Io LA and we also picked up an Io HD to replace our aging Kona 2 on our G5. Solid company and it’s been money well spent.
