IO good for Soundtrack Pro?
Posted by Francois Driessen on February 8, 2006 at 5:37 pmAnyone out there having success capturing audio to Soundtrack Pro from the IO? I have both my Kona2 and the IO in my sound input selection, but receive no signal from the IO.

February 9, 2006 at 1:22 amThe io is not core audio compliant. I think this might be why you won’t see any audio from your io. You can use your io as a d/a and then select your kona as an input. I have not tried this workflow, but I’d bet it’d work.

Jeremy, what limitations are there with a device such as the IO not being CA Compliant? What can we NOT do that we might want to do?
Also, what’s the typical Kona 2/3 workflow? How do they work in tandem and how are they connected?
One more thing, do editors prefer to use card like the Kona to eliminate the 4-7 frame delay that the IO has?
Thanks,
Robert

Well, you can’t use software that requires the use of core audio, such as soundtrack pro. You can’t play your mac sounds out through the io (woopdee doo). You cannot preview After Effects audio through the io (this is the one that I miss the most).

I use the io to bring in/layoff analog SD material. It also makes a great d/a. The io in this suite office is not tied to my machine, it’s actually tied to another machine. I have a Kona 2 on my machine, so I constantly use the io to feed my kona 2. They are tethered by an SDI cable and a cheap serial cable. It works splendidly. If they are on the same machine and you need to bring in analog SD material, then you select the io preset and away you go. Once the footage is in, I would suggest using the Kona2 for editing as the delay is lessened, although the delay does not bother me. the Kona 2 is CA compliant so soundtrack pro will work just fine.
The combo of the io and Kona2/3 is great.
If you have any other specific questions, feel free to ask.

February 9, 2006 at 7:04 pmYes you can if you have a G5. First connect the optical out from G5 to the IO. In the IO control panel go to input and for audio select SPDIF. Open the Audio MIDI setup and select Digital for your output. Make sure you do all this before you open Soundtrack Pro then open Soundtrack Pro and you should be hearing your audio via the IO…Ed

Is the IO always tethered to you? How is this managed?
Can you edit on the K2 and go out Y/C via the IO (K2->SDI->IO->Y/C)?
If you were just doing standard def with DVCAM or DV50 source material (most of the time) would you simply go with the IO or would you still want the Kona (Kona 3 in my case)?
Thanks,

February 9, 2006 at 9:18 pmNo, it is not. When I need the io I simply run two cables, an sdi and a long vga extender cable that acts as my rs-422 cable.
Yes you can edit on the K2 and go SDI out to the io and then S-Video of the io to whatever you want. All outputs of the io are active at all time. You can run component, composite, SDI, and S-Video all out at the same time.
The choice between the io and and K2 is all subjective. I so both SD and HD jobs so I need the Kona 2. If you don’t do HD or don’t plan on doing HD than io, or kona ls is fine for you. The Kona 2 will also allow you to upconvert to HD if you ever need to do that as well. There’s also the Kona LH (or LHe) that has both analog and digital ins and outs, along with SD and HD capability.
Does this help or does this confuse you even more?

And, I assume that the delay associated with the IO is not present in this situation since we are not using FW–right?
Also, it seems that if you have chosen to use AJA… that the IO is an easy decision since it can be integrated with and without the K3. So, you could start with IO SD only and suffer through the delays (just kidding) and when you actually need HD get the LHe or K3 card–makes sense?

February 9, 2006 at 9:56 pmIt makes a bunch of sense. that’s one great feature of the io is it’s PCI card/processor independent. PCI/PCI-X/PCIe, G4/G5, it really doesn’t matter with the io.
When I speak of the delay it is a mere 4 frames. It really really is not a big deal and you actually get used to it if you edit enough.
The delay I am talking about is only when you are editing, i.e. watching footage through FCP. You hit the space bar to play and there’s a teeny delay, when you hit the space bar to stop, there’s a four frame delay. That’s it. AJA makes great products, you won’t be disappointed.

February 13, 2006 at 4:26 pmDon’t want to sound like a dummy, but you said IO control panel. I have that for Kona2 but not for IO. Do you mean there is a controller that I have not installed on my macnine?
