invert masks

What are you using for your mask?

hi..

Lets assume I use the FCPX packaged circle mask in the effects lists.
I use also masks in the pixel film studios plugins toolbox too.

Same thing. the outside is masked out …. there is no invert to have the inside masked out. visa versa.

I want the inside masked or the outside masked.. i.e inverted.
In AE the mask has a drop down to add or subtract.

Seems simple but wondered if there was an option somewhere????

You can easily open a copy of the effect in Motion (if you have it) and Publish the invert parameter.

Or, use a circle generator in FCPX between the two layers, and stencil or silhouette the luminance in order to choose the layering order you want.

I do have motion… but can’t work out what I need to do as I hardly use it. any good tutorial videos on this? please

Sure, it’s kind of fun.

Right click the “Circle Mask” in FCPX and choose “open a copy in Motion”.

Motion opens.

Find the “Circle Mask” layer and single click it to select it.

Click the “inspector” tab or hit command-3 to toggle it open.

Click the “Mask” tab in the inspector.

Find the “invert Mask” checkbox, and click the arrow on the right side of that parameter and choose “Publish”. Looks like this:

Now you need to save it.

You hit save, and you have the option to “Save Original” or “Save as Duplicate”.

Save original will save this to the “Circle Mask Copy” filter in the “Keyer” category back in FCPX.

If you chose to Save as Duplicate, you can choose what to name it, and where the filter will show up (“Category”).

Once saved, find the filter, apply it, and you will see the “Invert Mask” checkbox available.

Just a word of warning. When you start playing more deeply with Motion, just don’t get intimidated when you start realizing how extensive it is. Just go slow and steady. The fact that there are zillions of generators each with additional zillions of possible settings can kinda be intimidating to some.

Just use it to the level you need. And know that a career of exploring it likely won’t let you try everything it’s capable of doing.

Thanks Bill,

I have used it extensively in earlier versions. In fact did a whole animation with it, but found that AE was much more what I needed. However since then I only use it for effects over like smoke etc.. But FCPX effects gives me an additional use for it. Its a great programme. Thanks for advice.
