    Hi,

I realise this kind of question has been asked a lot but i’d really appreciate an answer, specific to my budget and needs please…
I own a Mac Pro (4-core) 1st Gen – 2006-2007 with 7GB of ram and a Radeon 3870 graphics card. I’m currently training to be an editor and use final cut studio 3…I’ve recently edited a short film and for the first time did a sound mix in soundtrack pro and found it to be sluggish…this project also involved using some hd footage in FCP which also slowed it down…aside from converting footage into prores for editing(which i believe should improve performance for hd in fcp) and upgrading to snow leopard, (which I’m going to do next week, and should improve stp performance apparently), I’m also now going to buy 4gb of ram(I’d ideally like 8 but have budget constraints) and new internal/external hard-drives. I’m also going to be getting adobe CS5 and look to be using photoshop and after effects fairly regularly…Future projects include an hour long doc destined for tv broadcast and some music video work which will include short videos shot on the red camera…
I have a budget of around $550 (£340) for the extra storage and am looking for some expert advice before i take the plunge please. At the moment I’m thinking of getting 2tb of internal hard-drive space and 1tb of external hard-drive space…

For the internal drives i’m thinking of either:

    Two of these:

    or one of these:
    https://www.advancetec.co.uk/acatalog/2TB_Hitachi_Saturn_0F1031_hard_drive.h...

For the external hard-drive i’m thinking of either:

    one of these:

    or one of these:
    https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/734330-REG/CalDigit_791933_1TB_AV_Dri...

For the g-raid i would also like to buy an e-sata card and have read that some wont work too well with my slightly older mac pro, but have read this one is good, if a little pricey for me…

    https://www.firmtek.com/seritek/seritek-2me4-e/

and with the caldigit i’m looking for a good deal on both the hard-drive and the usb3 card…is the caldigit worth buying without the usb 3 card?…
One last question is about using external/internal hard-drives when editing…what is the best way of using them for both storage and while working on a project?

    Thanks for the help

    Mike
