  Interlacing factor

  We are running two systems with Avid MC2 on them, and have been fighting extreme interlacing for some months.

  It is particularly evident when text (generated in Boris Red 4) is moved horizontally, like when supers slide in from right or left.

  The artifacts we were seeing were quite bad, with the interlacing ghosts offset by as much as the width of an entire capital sized letter in the text.

  We were looking at some older projects that did not show this level of interlacing problem, and discovered that we had substituted a QT movie clip of SD black on the Avid timeline where there was no actual video. Boris does not like nothing on the video track when it generates “filler”, so we were using video we rendered.

  We now feel confident that this “black clip” being under all the other layers of boris created content was the culprit, adding undesirable interlacing to the layers above it during render or export.

  We substituted a “black clip”.avi rednered out of Boris to use as the base layer on the timeline. This seems to have substantially reduced the excessive interlacing, when viewed on a TV monitor, not a computer monitor.

  Perhaps this will help someone, it sure is making my day run more smoothly.
