Interlace Issue

There is a setting in Sorenson to de-interlace. Go to the filters tab and play with the different settings. “None” usually works good for me. I also crop the edges to TV safe (really helps when providing client approval) and adjust the black level.

As for the interlacing… I have commented on this before, and everyone agreed thats just “how it is” I really notice it when I take those clips into AE to composite them. If change the scale and/or rotation it turns into a striped mess. I am forced to de-interlace clips before I composite with them. I’d love to hear what you find out from AJA about this.

Sorry but that is a fact of life with field based content, it is also the best reason to shoot progressive frames for non NTSC delivery. Your best bet is to edit your project as normal then run it thru the Nattress standards conversion as the last stage prior encoding for a DVD.

NOTE: some networks will not allow anything other than a “hardware conversion” for broadcast transmission use but for a DVD release like you discussed using graeme’s filters works great.

Thanks for the reply. I was expecting this answer as my Sr. Editor and I have searched high and low and we are unable to find any solutions. It’s interesting that DV does not have this issue do to the 8:1 compression within. I wish there was a setting on the card(s) that could convert the captured clip to “p” instead of bringing it in as an interlaced file when using analogue Beta SP. It sure would make things easier when the final file needs to stay within a digital progressive scan world like the desktop monitors of our corporate clients. I will try the suggestion within Sorenson that you recommended.

Hi Rick, Gary et al:

The filters feature within Sorenson Squeeze 4.1 is brilliant. I’ve made some custom filters with de-interlace, noise reduction, contrast, cropping, etc and I am happy with the results. Still think AJA and Blackmagic should look at what AVID does to solve the interlace issue with their systems when analogue Beta SP footage, which is normally an interlace format, is captured into their systems. I’m sure AJA and Blackmagic could learn a couple of things that would not require a post effect filter to be place over mastered QT’s in third party applications like Sorenson or FCP. Would still like to see my graphics and motion footage to be clean as opposed to a de-interlace filter. Oh well, for the time being, it’s better than where I started.

remember Sheldon that these companies are making video products and in their world interlace is not really an issue as the final output for content is meant to be played out to a TV that interlaces everything. ( not too many Pal or NTSC progressive displays for consumers)

As more and more people move into HD however this will become more and more an issue as most production in HD is not shot as interlaced any more – almost all is being shot so that it conforms to the progressive standard (even if it needs to be shown as interlaced at some point.)
